Engineers could use a Union
Do engineers need a union? According to this article, the workplace is rapidly changing and union membership can have important benefits. For instance, unions can make obtaining career goals easier. Joining a union gives engineers more of a voice in corporate boardrooms where they might otherwise be ignored by management. Not to mention that unions can provide increases in wages and lead to better products. Safety is also a concern that can be given less priority without a strong voice from the engineers. These factors have contributed to making engineering one of the few fields where union membership is actually increasing; engineering fields involving biomedical and medical equipment manufacturing will see a large increase. Unions benefit companies by providing a more even playing field from which both engineers and management can voice their opinions. Getting equal perspective from both sides will help create the best product. Other benefits of a stronger labor voice can give engineers more control of their future. For example, a company decision to outsource has a greater chance of being reversed with a united labor voice. Read the full article at Machine Design.
